Overview:
Varicose veins are veins that have become enlarged and twisted. Although they
can occur in various areas, they most commonly occur in the legs. Varicose
veins are common in the superficial veins of the legs, which undergo high
pressure when standing. As a result, they usually cause pain when standing or
walking. They may also cause itching, scratching, and ulcers.

Traditionally, the varicose veins are removed surgically. Because about 90% of
the blood in the legs is returned by the deep veins, the removal of the
superficial veins usually results in no serious harm. Serious complications of
varicose veins are rare.



 

Raise Your Legs- Varicose veins are much weaker than healthy veins and lack
the strength to pump blood efficiently. When legs are affected by varicose veins,
a loss of blood flow from the legs to the heart can occur, allowing pain or
discomfort to result. When aching begins, elevate your legs to above your hips
by using a reclining chair or a leg pillow while resting. Doing this, your
discomfort will soon start to diminish.

Support Hose- Use of these stockings will help reduce the blood's tendency to
accumulate in the small vessels close to the skin. As a result, the blood will be
pushed further inside your leg to the deeper veins where blood pumping will act
more efficiently. These stockings can be purchased from most pharmacies and
stores.

Wear Comfortable Shoes- Varicose veins alone can cause a great deal of
harm and pain to your legs. Avoid further aggravation and avoid high heels or
uncomfortable shoes of any kind.

Watch Your Weight- An increase in your body's weight results in increased
pressure added to the veins of your legs. This is why pregnant women are
commonly prone to varicose veins.

Tilt Your Bed to Ease Symptoms- By raising the foot of your bed several inches
before going asleep you allow gravity to aid the pumping of the blood from your
legs to your heart. Doing this can prevent night pain and discomfort.

However, those that have a history of heart trouble or difficulty breathing should
consult a doctor before making this adjustment.

Wear Loose Clothes- Tight-fitting garments, girdles, and panty hose can
further disrupt your body's natural blood flow and can cause further blood pool
buildup in the legs.

Quit Smoking- Based on studies, smoking can both contribute towards and
irritate varicose veins.

Beware of Medications- Hormonal imbalance can contribute towards forms of
varicose veins. If your veins enlarged upon the use of a birth control pill it may
very well be the cause.

Exercise to Prevent Varicose Veins- Lack of bodily movement can cause the
pooling of blood in your legs. A simple walk or jog daily can prevent this from
happening.

Avoid Pain Killers- Though pain killers prove to be effective in relieving
varicose vein pain, they should not be considered a healthy option. Ignoring the
pain of your legs won't allow you to take appropriate action and precautions
when blood pooling occurs. Ignoring the pooling up of the blood can lead to
increased severity.
