As more and more people experience the yellowing of teeth, more and more
people demand from dentists whiter teeth. But before solutions are sought, the
causes should be known. Tobacco, whether smoked or chewed, is one of the
largest causes of stained teeth. However, other less known items such as
coffee, tea, and colas also contribute greatly towards tooth discoloration.
It should be noted that because when one ages the enamel of your tooth thins
out, the underlying yellowish layer is naturally exposed.
Rinse After Meals- To prevent food remnants from sticking to your teeth for
extended periods of time and leaving behind plaque and discoloration, rinse
regularly. Even if you don't have the time or prefer not to brush 3 times a day, a
simple rinse should help a lot.
Try Baking Soda to Whiten Teeth- A pinch of baking soda can be applied to
your toothbrush to add a whitening effect. However, make sure not to use too
much baking soda as this may be too rough on your teeth, wearing away at your
tooth enamel. Rather, brush very softly, not vigorously, to avoid enamel
damage. Limit yourself to one or two light baking soda brushing sessions
Go Electric to Prevent Stains- Electric tooth brushes can do a much more
thorough job removing plaque and preventing stains than you can.
Avoid Teeth Whiteners- Try to stay away from product teeth whiteners, as they
are usually too abrasive and rough on your teeth. Rather, stick to small
amounts of baking soda combined with gentle brushing.
Quit Smoking- An obvious one, but worth emphasis because of its harsh
impact on your teeth.
Limitable Beverages- Try to limit your consumption of colas, teas, and coffee.
The rule of thumb is: if they can stain your cup, they can stain your teeth.
Use a Straw- Though you probably won't want to with hot coffee, sipping fruit
juices, teas, and colas through a straw can decrease the exposure these fluids
have to your teeth.
